around the world, how are you? Hope you all doing well, feeling happy, and
healthy. In this post, I’m going to do a review of The 3rd International
Conference on Technology, Education, and Social Science Seminar or ICTESS 3
Seminar for short. The seminar was held on the 10th of December 2020
via Zoom at 09:00 am-12:30 pm for session one and 01:00 pm-02:30 pm for session
two. This seminar was hosted by the Slamet Riyadi University, Surakarta. The
theme of the seminar is Global Security and Global Cooperation in a Changing
World with a few topics that are discussed, which are Global Food Security,
Global Security and Sustainable Agriculture, Global Economic Cooperation,
Global Security in the Digital Age, and Law Enforcement in Changing World. The
seminar was attended by one keynote speaker and five speakers, originally there
was going to be seven speakers, but two of the speakers couldn’t make it.
Keynote speaker H.E. Ambassador Y.
Kristiarto S. Legowo was the first one to open the discussion. Mr. Legowo is
the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Commonwealth of Australia. The
topics that Mr. Legowo talks about are consisting how the pandemic is changing
everything that happens in the world, including how diplomacy works, he also
talks about great power competitions in politics, security, and economics, and non-traditional
security challenges, such as religion, terrorisms, violence, crimes, warfare,
et cetera. He also talks about how there are so many differences in future
competition as well as the international environment during the cold war and
now. Today’s competitive fields are nearly equal, exports imports in the world
are increased significantly, and also the countries in the world are
contributed towards peace and stability. He also mentioned that in the last few
years there are many developments between Indonesia and Australia partnership,
it can be seen from The Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership
Agreement (IA-CEPA) that has been signed by Jokowi and Prime Minister Scott
Morrison in February 2020. Mr. Legowo hoped that in the future Indonesia could
keep contributing more bilaterally or even regionally, to help and worked with
other countries.
After Mr. Legowo, the first speaker
to present their material are Prof. Ts. Dr. Burhanuddin from the Universiti
Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. Mr. Burhanuddin started his presentation by talking
about Covid-19. From how Covid-19 started to its symptoms and amount of cases.
He then talks about the impact of Covid-19 on business and economy, which are :
1. The business community is badly
infected in the global economy under the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic
2. Maybank Group estimated that the
Malaysian economy may shrink by 3.3%
3. Malaysia Employers Federation
estimated that the number of unemployed persons may reach up to 2 million in
2020 with a staggering unemployment rate of 13%
4. Financial statements which present a
true, fair, and timely picture of the business is vital to assist the company
to appreciate their financial condition
5. Companies need to identify problem
impacting their financial statement areas and try to think of countermeasures
to address the threats to their survival
6. Then, they can derive strategies to
overcome the problem
7. Next, relevant tools should be
deployed to give them chance fighting the pandemic
8. There are various tools and methods
available, includes but not limited to Covid-19 difficult time
The company and business strategy in
facing pandemic Covid-19 are :
1. Form call centers and emergency response
team immediately
2. Review staff current locations and
their traveling records
3. Revisit crisis and continuity plans
timely
4. Evaluate the supply chain management
5. Identify potential points of failures
6. Get the right communication right
7. Use scenario analysis
8. Do not lose sight of other risks
9. Conduct research to study how to do
things differently
10. Discover related tools and technology
The conclusion is the response window
for risk in business is measured in days, while recovery is measured in years.
Those companies that are well-prepared and ready for changes will always
recover quickly from any disaster.
The second speaker is Prof. Takuya
Sugahara, Ph.D. from Ehime University Japan. Mr. Sugahara talks about the
evaluation of the healthy function of spices by global cooperation between
Indonesia and Japan. He talks about how spices and herbs have powerful health
benefits and the use of them has been incredibly important throughout history. Many
spices were celebrated for their medicinal properties, well before culinary
use. Modern science has now shown that many of them do indeed carry remarkable
health benefits. At the presentation, Mr. Sugahara talks about the spice cumin,
which has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial benefits. He also
talks about the collaboration of Japan with Indonesia, specifically the
collaboration of Ehime University with Gadjah Mada University, University of
Papua, Jember University, and Indonesia International Institute for Life
Sciences. They did a collaboration on immunostimulation for anti-allergy,
anti-inflammation, anti-obesity, et cetera. Ehime University and Gadjah Mada
University, do a collaborative development of functional food. They evaluate
the health function of spices and the mode of action. In developing the
functional foods the both use the same evidence. In conclusion, Japan is making
food that has health benefits from using herbs, just like in Indonesia there is
jamu.
The third speaker Assoc. Prof. Dr.
Chin. Min Lin from the National Taichung Institute of Technology, Taiwan, talks
about Student’s Internship Experiences. The Ministry of Education encourages
domestic colleges and universities to send outstanding students to study abroad
or foreign professional internship subsidies, with the purpose of fully expand
the participation of young domestic students in international exchanges and
cooperation activities. The outcome of it is the students will have a better
understanding of the lifestyle and background of each country’s culture, which
will help deepen the relationship and cooperation with each country in the
future. The conclusion is, after completing the internship, students had a
positive attitude towards the internship experience and valued the experience
very much. Whether it was about learning interpersonal communication skills or
professional knowledge, the internship had a great impact on the student’s learning.
The fourth speak is Dr. Shielilo
Amihan from the University of Perpetual Help, Philippines. He talks about
accessible, relevant, and sustainable education. Mr. Amihan explains the
vulnerable society during pandemic, resilience in education. Education-wise the
impact of the pandemic is on students, parents, and faculty. The crime rate
still increased (approximately 5%) despite quarantine measures, other than that
mental health cases reported have also risen. On technology and communication,
it caused ethical concern and miscommunication, also social media give of false
information and negative vibe. He also talks about the good of multicultural
education, which are more classroom activites for students to interact with
students from other groups. Include the issue of stereotyping.
The last speaker is from the Slamet
Riyadi University itself, Dr. Sri Handayani Marwan. Ms. Handayani talks about
how education is the key to the continuity of the economy in the 21st
century. She explains that education is a process where a person obtains
knowledge, skill, habits, value, or attitudes. There are four pillars of
education and skill n the 21st century which are, know, do, live
together, and be. There are 4Cs skills
in the 21st century that we must have which are, critical thinking
as in finding a solution to a problem, creativity as in thinking outside the
box, collaboration as in working with others, and communication as in talking
to others effectively. The conclusion
is, integrating 4Cs skills in English language teaching seminar class was
successfully conducted by giving complex project work involving critical
thinking, collaboration, goal-setting, meaningful communication, and the
development of a challenging product, by that we encourage the learners to have
4Cs skills.
After the explanations and QnA session, the seminar for the students ended at about 12.30 pm. For the second session, it is only for the ones that are invited in zoom break out rooms to explore more. With that being said, from the seminar, I get to learn about how covid-19 changes almost everything that happens all around the world, how company and businesses have their strategy for facing Covid-19, the benefits of spices and herbs, the benefits of doing an internship in another country, multicultural education, 4Cs skills, and also the collaborations that Indonesia does with other countries.
